As an example of a combined system for melting preliminary products, buffering raw materials and supplying downstream dosing processes, Will & Hahnenstein GmbH presents a new melting chamber for 10,000 litres of edible fat. Its design and construction benefit from more than 85 years of experience in thermal equipment manufacturing.
The ten cube-shaped blocks of fat, each measuring approximately one metre on every side, are supported on runners and arranged in two rows. Loading requires only one operator, who does not need to leave the forklift because the roller doors at the loading opening are remotely controlled and all storage positions are visible from above.
Once the doors have closed, the heating phase begins using heated recirculating air. Two high-performance fans generate turbulent airflow, which is heated highly efficiently to approximately 80 °C by a generously sized spiral-tube heat exchanger. Hot water is used as the heating medium.
After the target temperature has been reached, the blocks of fat begin to melt and drip into a collection and storage tank with a capacity of approximately 10,000 litres. To accelerate the process further, some of the liquid melt is recirculated by a pump and distributed from above through a ten-head shower system onto the partially melted blocks. This process step considerably reduces the melting time.
The system’s entirely stainless-steel interior requires a sophisticated design incorporating well-draining baffles, rear membrane seals for the stainless-steel roller doors and the complete collection of all fat droplets in the tank.
For further temperature control of the liquid melt, the tank is equipped with smooth-tube hot-water heat exchangers. Their heat transfer and efficiency are substantially improved by the constant movement of the fat within the tank, which is generated by recirculating the melt.
When required by the downstream production reactor, the combined circulation and transfer pump conveys the melt from the tank through an integrated coarse filter.
A fully automatic control system manages the various heating circuits, recirculating-air fans and product-tank level monitoring, including status signals sent to the external process-monitoring system, completing the overall installation.

Electric Melting Hopper
In this melting system, the hot liquid is transferred directly to a mixing reactor. The feed hood acts as a buffer and is equipped with MIN and MAX sensors. It also automatically prevents heat from escaping upwards.

250-Litre Steam-Heated Melting Vessel
This vessel is used to melt edible fats, which are then transferred into dosing buckets by tilting for further processing.

Heating cabinet with turning facility for drums
High sensible products are melted in this heating cabinet by turning the upright drum continuously around its horizontal axis. Low air temperatures can be used for the heat treatment because the intensive movement of the product inside the drum fastens the melting process. The drum can be loaded directly from the pallet into the drum basket of the stopped rolling equipment.
